Protective Padding Since 1990

Finding the Right Landing Mat for Your Facility

AK Athletic Equipment has decades of experience manufacturing protective padding for athletic and specialty training environments. Our landing and crash mats are commonly used for aerial art studios, martial arts academies, rock climbing walls, circus performances and more. The mesh sides allow air to escape for a soft landing. Each landing mat and training pit is made with safety, durability, and longevity in mind. Our foam provides excellent cushioning that helps build a student's confidence.

Where Can Landing Mats Be Used?

Every training environment is different. The activity, available floor space, impact level, and how frequently the mat needs to be moved should all be considered when choosing your setup.

Aerial Arts

Create a designated padded landing area beneath aerial silks, hoops, poles, and other aerial equipment.

Choosing Your Mat

Start With How the Mat Will Be Used

Before deciding on a mat size, think about the activity taking place above or around it. An aerial studio, for example, may benefit from a foldable option such as the  Aerial Arts Bi-Fold Landing Mat, while another facility may require a different size based on its training needs and available space.

  • What activity will take place in the area?
  • How much floor space is available?
  • Will the mat remain in place or be moved regularly?
  • Does the facility need one mat or multiple sections?
  • Would a custom size better fit the available space?

If you're unsure which size makes the most sense, send our sales team your dimensions and project details.

Please note: AK Athletics does not recommend or advise on mat thickness. Customers should determine the appropriate thickness based on their specific activity, facility, and safety requirements.

Plan Before You Order

How to Measure Your Landing Area

Accurate measurements make it easier to determine which landing mat size  will work best in your facility.

01

Measure the Area

Record the overall length and width of the floor space where the mat will be positioned.

02

Note Obstacles

Identify walls, columns, platforms, equipment, doors, or other permanent objects that may affect the layout.

03

Explain the Use

Tell our team what activities will take place in the space and whether the mats need to move or remain in position.

Using Multiple Landing Mats Together

If you need landing mats for a large area, contact our sales department to discuss options for using or connecting multiple crash mats together.

Larger individual mats can also be useful depending on the layout. AK Athletics offers different landing mat sizes for facilities that need more surface coverage while still keeping the mat movable.

Not every facility has the same floor plan. If a standard landing mat doesn't work for your available space, AK Athletics can also discuss custom sizing and configurations designed around your training environment.

Versatile Training Equipment

More Than an Aerial Arts Mat

Landing mats aren't limited to one sport. The same type of protective padding can be used for many different training applications depending on the facility and the skills being practiced.

Martial arts programs, gymnastics facilities, circus training spaces, aerial studios, and other athletic programs may all need additional cushioning in specific areas.

That's why understanding the application is just as important as knowing the dimensions of the space. You can compare AK Athletics landing mat options before deciding which direction makes sense for your facility.

Mat Care

Moving & Repositioning Your Landing Mat

Once your mat is in your facility, proper handling can help protect the cover, seams, handles, and overall construction.

✓

Quick Tip: How should I move a landing mat?

Always use the handles when moving the mat.

Use the handles located on the sides of each mat to assist with transportation or position adjustments. Avoid dragging the mat across the floor. Dragging is discouraged and damage caused by dragging isn't covered under our warranty.

Larger mats may require more than one person to move. Plan the move before repositioning oversized equipment and use the available handles rather than pulling on the cover or seams.

Landing Mat Q&A

Quick Landing Mat Recap

Here are the key things to remember when choosing, measuring, positioning, and caring for a landing mat.

01 What should I consider when choosing a landing mat?

Start with how the mat will be used, how much floor space is available, and whether it will stay in place or need to be moved. You should also consider whether one mat provides enough coverage or if your facility may need multiple sections or a custom size.

02 What types of facilities can use landing mats?

Landing and crash mats can be used in aerial arts studios, gymnastics facilities, martial arts spaces, ninja courses, climbing gyms, circus and performance environments, and other specialty athletic facilities.

03 How should I measure my landing area?

Measure the overall length and width of the area where the mat will be positioned. Note walls, columns, platforms, doors, equipment, and other permanent obstacles that could affect the layout.

04 Can multiple landing mats be used together?

Yes. Multiple landing mats can provide additional coverage for larger or specialized training areas. The best configuration depends on your available space and how the mats will be used.

05 What if a standard landing mat doesn't fit my space?

If a standard size doesn't work with your facility layout, AK Athletics can discuss custom sizing and configurations. Have your dimensions, application, and project details ready.

06 How should I move or reposition a landing mat?

Use the handles located on the sides of the mat when moving or repositioning it. Avoid dragging the mat across the floor, and use more than one person when necessary for larger mats.
