AK Athletics Installs Solar Panels to Foster Sustainability

Posted on October 11, 2024 by Customer Service

AK Athletics, a woman-owned business specializing in high-quality athletic padding equipment, has made a significant commitment to sustainability by installing solar panels at its headquarters in Canal Winchester, Ohio. This initiative is projected to drastically reduce the company’s electric bills, with anticipated savings exceeding one million dollars over the system's lifetime, while also playing an important role in lowering its carbon footprint.

With the support of Sarah Straley at TSR Solar, AK Athletics secured a $160,000 grant from the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), covering 40% of the solar panel installation costs through the USDA’s Ohio office. This funding enabled the installation of nearly 300 high-voltage solar panels, generating close to 150 kW of electricity. The entire process, from grant writing to final paperwork, took about six months, highlighting the company’s commitment to making a lasting environmental impact

"The solar panel installation has already significantly reduced our energy costs—dropping our bills from nearly $4,000 in May to just over $300 in July. But this project is not just about saving money; it's about making a positive impact for athletes and the planet."

— Angela Katz, Owner of AK Athletics

This initiative reinforces AK Athletics’ mission to ensure that every athlete has a safe game in a sustainable environment. By investing in solar energy, AK Athletics illustrates that renewable energy solutions are both practical and financially beneficial.
